Species diversity and the scale of the landscape mosaic: do scales of movement and patch size aect diversity?

چکیده
We use a combination of a model and empirical data to examine the relationship between the scale of the landscape mosaic and individual movement patterns on the measurement of local butter ̄y species diversity. In landscapes where patch sizes are smaller, the type of patch adjacent to the patch surveyed can in ̄uence both local species richness and incidence. In landscapes composed of larger patches, adjacency has no eect on species richness or incidence. We hypothesize that the mechanism for species enrichment is the potential for movement of individuals between habitats, resulting in either (a) spillover of species from the higher-diversity patches into other habitats, or (b) habitat sampling by species that bene®t from the resources in adjacent patches. In order to determine whether landscape con®guration alone can account for the observed patterns of diversity, we employ a simulation model. Simulation results suggest that both specialist and generalist butter ̄ies can sample a much more diverse array of habitat types in a more ®ne-grained landscape. # 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Determining landscape parameters influencing species richness of habitat patches is one of the most important issues in conservation biology. Many previous studies have investigated the influence of habitat parameters on bird assemblages in forest patches, but studies seeking effects of oasis parameters on bird assemblages are very scarce. Karkas Protected Area is located in semi-arid zone in...
متن کاملStudy on Genetic Diversity of Terminal Fragment Sequence of Isolated Persian Tobacco Mosaic Virus
Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is one of the devastating plant viruses in the world that infects more than 200 plant species. Movement protein plays a supportive role in the movement of other plant viruses, and viral coat protein is highly expressed in infected plants and affects replication and movements of TMV. In order to investigate genetic variation in the terminal fragment sequence in Iranian...

متن کاملStudy on the variation of plant species diversity components along elevation gradient using additive partitioning (case study: protected area of Geno, Hormozgan province)
Conservation of vegetation is one of most important tools for conservation of soil and decreasing erosion. Therefore, knowledge about vegetation characteristics, such as diversity, is the first and most important biological tools for soil conservation. One of the methods in which we can collect useful data about plant diversity, is additive partitioning. In the current study, plant species dive...
متن کاملScale dependent drivers of wild bee diversity in tropical heterogeneous agricultural landscapes
Factors associated with agricultural intensification, for example, loss of seminatural vegetation and pesticide use has been shown to adversely affect the bee community. These factors may impact the bee community differently at different landscape scales. The scale dependency is expected to be more pronounced in heterogeneous landscapes. However, the scale-dependent response of the bee communit...
